Welcome to Powys

Powys covers the historic counties of Montgomeryshire and Radnorshire, most of Brecknockshire, and a small part of Denbighshire — an area of 5,196 km², making it the largest principal area in Wales by land area.

The majority of the Powys population is made up of small villages and towns with the largest, Newtown, having a population of just over 12,000. Most of the area is mountainous, with north-south transportation by car being scenic but slow.

The area is named after the older Welsh/English Kingdom of Powys. This kingdom occupied the northern two thirds of the current boundary as well as lands now in England. It came to an end when it was occupied by Llywelyn ap Gruffydd of Gwynedd during the 1260s. 750 years on and Powys is a tranquil and enjoyable place to visit with museums, castles, an Eco-Centre and plenty of outdoor activities to be enjoyed.
