Herefordshire is a historic and ceremonial county bordering the English ceremonial counties of Shropshire to the north, Worcestershire to the east, Gloucestershire to the southeast, and the Welsh preserved counties of Gwent to the south west and Powys to the west. As the second largest unitary authority, the county is one of the most rural and least densely populated in England, with less than one person per hectare. Hereford is a cathedral city and is the county town; with a population of approximately 55,000 inhabitants it is also the largest settlement.
Agriculture continues to play the most significant visible role in an area still primarily known for its fruit and cider production, and the world famous Hereford cattle breed. But the unspoiled beauty of the landscape, coupled with good roads, low population and a wide variety of activities, tourism is becoming increasingly important and the service industry is the largest employment sector.
