Welcome to Shrewsbury
Shrewsbury is a historic market town with the town centre having a largely unaltered medieval street plan. The town features over 660 historic listed buildings, including several examples of timber framing from the 15th century and 16th century. The Norman Earl of Shrewsbury, Roger de Montgomery, founded Shrewsbury Castle and Shrewsbury Abbey, a former Benedictine monastery, in the 11th Century.
The town hosts one of the oldest and largest horticultural events in the country, Shrewsbury Flower Show, and is known for its floral displays, having won various awards this century, including Britain in Bloom in 2006.
Shrewsbury is also home to one of the region's main agricultural shows - the West Mid Show, held every year, usually in May, at the Shropshire Agricultural Showground on the outskirts of town at Coton Hill. The town also hosts the Shrewsbury International Music Festival, which draws performers from all over the world for about a week, with a final concert in the Abbey.
