Welcome to Ross-on-Wye
Ross-on-Wye (Welsh: Rhosan ar Wy) is a small market town in south-eastern Herefordshire, England, located on the River Wye on the northern edge of the Forest of Dean. The town is known for its antique shops, market square and market hall, not to mention its high number of public houses.
Ross-on-Wye Today
Today’s visitor tends to be more active than those of the tourist heyday of the 18th century but river cruises are still available, alongside angling, canoeing and cycling into Symonds Yat and the Forest of Dean. Those that prefer giving their taste buds a workout can enjoy cream teas and cider routes instead.
Ross-on-Wye History
The British tourist industry was established here when, in 1745, a local rector started taking friends on boat trips down the Wye. Soon the river and the spectacular landscape with its castles and abbeys proved a big draw and remain so today.
