Much Wenlock is a small medieval “black and white” English town in central
Shropshire. Situated between
Shrewsbury and
Bridgnorth it is also near to the Ironbridge Gorge.
With a population of around 3,000 Much Wenlock feels much more like a village than a town but still manages to have a variety of shops that cater to the young, the old, collectors, readers, gardeners and anyone who just loves to poke around.
Earlier known simply as "Wenlock" ("White Place") in Celtic ("Gwyn-loc"),
the town history dates back to an abbey or monastery founded in 680. The settlement survived Viking raids, Lady Godiva’s patronage and the Norman Conquest. The Town’s charter was finally granted in 1631 by Charles 1st.
