Welcome to Much Wenlock

Much Wenlock is a small medieval “black and white” English town in central Shropshire. Situated between Shrewsbury and Bridgnorth it is also near to the Ironbridge Gorge.

With a population of around 3,000 Much Wenlock feels much more like a village than a town but still manages to have a variety of shops that cater to the young, the old, collectors, readers, gardeners and anyone who just loves to poke around.

Earlier known simply as "Wenlock" ("White Place") in Celtic ("Gwyn-loc"), the town history dates back to an abbey or monastery founded in 680. The settlement survived Viking raids, Lady Godiva’s patronage and the Norman Conquest. The Town’s charter was finally granted in 1631 by Charles 1st.

The town is known for the Wenlock Olympian Games, set up by Dr. William Penny Brookes in 1850. In 1861 he was also instrumental in setting up the Shropshire Games and later in 1866, the National Olympian Games. Dr. Brookes is credited as a founding father of the Modern Olympic Games, and the town's secondary school is named after him. The Wenlock Olympian Games, a four-day event during the second weekend in July, are still contested in the town annually.

Nearby Wenlock Edge is a limestone escarpment, roughly 330 metres above sea level and is so large it can be seen from space. The deciduous woodland that covers much of the steep slopes are perhaps best known as the setting for A.E. Houseman’s poem "On Wenlock Edge the Wood's in Trouble". Ralph Vaughan Williams also composed 'On Wenlock Edge' in 1909 and it is also the subject of several works by the famous artist L. S. Lowry with the best known piece "A Bit of Wenlock Edge" which is a fine pencil drawing of the escarpment detailing the woodland.
