Welcome to Ledbury
East of Hereford and west of the Malvern Hills, Ledbury is an ancient borough, dating back to the Domesday Book. Today, Ledbury is a thriving market town in rural England; still sporting a large number of timber-framed buildings as well as notable buildings such as the parish church, the Painted Room (containing sixteenth century frescoes), and Eastnor Castle.
Once home to the poetess Elizabeth Barrett Browning, it is also the birthplace of poet laureate John Masefield and Saint Catherine of Ledbury. St Catherine, on praying for the safe return of her stolen horses, saw hoofprints clearly visible in the rocky bottom of a brook leading her to the Hoar Stone, which is now said to be the horse thief petrified for his crimes. The prints are still visible in the brook to this day
Ledbury is a venue for numerous annual festivals (particularly the Ledbury Poetry Festival) and The Big Chill music event at Eastnor Castle, which brings thousands of young people to the town each year.
